Colour accuracy drives growth for Sign and Badge

Sign and Badge   |   Australia

Formed in the early 2000s through the merger of several businesses, Sign and Badge combines a wide range of products and capabilities under one brand. The company has a long history of servicing hospitals, universities and banks, and has experienced rapid growth in the construction sector over the past decade. They have also maintained a longstanding relationship with Roland DG devices, most recently upgrading to a TrueVis XG-640 for its ultra-wide colour gamut.

We have already spoken to some of our existing clients about offering higher quality results in colour, using our new printer.

Before

  • Had difficulty with colour accuracy.
  • Some work needed to be outsourced, or produced using cut vinyl to meet colour expectations.

After

  • Wider colour gamut meant previously outsourced printing could now be produced in-house.
  • Ability to meet more demanding client specifications and stronger positioning in competitive, brand-focused sectors.

Based in Bayswater, Victoria, Sign and Badge produces name badges, large format signage, braille, statutory signage and architectural feature signage.

Beyond simply ‘making signs’, the team focuses on ‘solving clients’ communication and branding challenges through well-designed, well-built signage'.

The Challenge: Increasing Demand for Colour Precision

While Sign and Badge have always delivered high-quality output, increasing client focus on strict brand guidelines in recent years, has made colour accuracy more challenging.

Without specialist inks such as red, green and orange, some colours were difficult to achieve. This required Sign and Badge to outsource, or use solid colour vinyl, just as the business was becoming more brand-focused and servicing more B2B clients.

The Solution: Upgrade to the TrueVis XG-640

With a longstanding relationship with Roland DG, upgrading their print technology to the latest Roland DG offering was a natural step. Sign and Badge added the TrueVis XG-640 to their production lineup, alongside their existing XR-640 and GS-24.

Bryce McDowell from Sign and Badge explains it simply "the upgrade from our XR to the XG just made sense."

The upgrade from our XR to the XG just made sense.

He had already anticipated the move, telling their dealer, Spicers Australia, that "as soon as the newest version of their machine hit the market, they would be interested."

The decision was reinforced by years of dependable performance from Roland DG with Bryce commenting "our Roland DG digital printer has been the heart of the business for over 10 years.”

Expanded Colour Gamut Unlocks New Opportunities

The addition of red, green and orange inks with their XG-640 has significantly expanded Sign and Badge’s colour gamut, delivering immediate and measurable benefits across the business. The team can now match legacy prints while achieving greater vibrancy, ensuring stronger consistency with clients’ strict brand guidelines and increasing confidence in applications where colour is critical.

This expanded capability has also reduced the need for outsourcing, improving turnaround times and overall production efficiency.

Bryce notes "we have already spoken to some of our existing clients about offering higher quality results in colour, using our new printer." At the same time, the enhanced colour performance has opened up new growth opportunities, enabling Sign and Badge to strengthen its position in competitive, brand-focused sectors, and appeal to new clients seeking premium results.

Reliability that Supports Long Term Success

As operating costs rise and competition increases, reliable equipment remains critical to the business’ success.

Bryce emphasises this point saying "I would strongly recommend Roland DG for their products, software and service. They definitely stand out in the market. As things get more competitive and costs go up, the most important thing to a business like ours, is the reliability of your investment."

Looking Ahead
